First Aid for Burns, Scalds, and Heat-Related Trauma
Burns, and scalds are common types of injuries that a first aid provider will have to deal with. Few chapters in the medical history of Athens County, Ohio, are more notorious or fascinating than that concerning Walter Freeman, M.D., and the more than 200 frontal lobotomies he performed at the Athens State Hospital in seven visits between 1953 and 1957.Until the middle of the twentieth century, treatment for most inpatients in large state hospitals, like that in Athens, was limited to providing a safe and humane environment. Effective drugs for mental illnesses did not become available until the late 1950s and early 1960s.In 1936 Egas Moniz, M.D., a Portugese physician who eventually won a Nobel Prize for his work, reported the results of his earliest frontal lobotomies in a French medical...
Patient Registry Started for the Medical Breakthrough Treatment of Vagus Nerve Stimulation
In an effort to further understand why vagus nerve stimulation therapy is more effective than anitidepressants with patients who suffer from chronic depression, the manufacturer of the vagus nerve stimulator, Cyberonics, Inc., announced the launch of the first treatment-resistant depression(TRD) patient registry. This registry that will help the medical community's understanding of TRD, and determine which pateints are most appropriate for this procedure. I think that the data produced from the registry will significantly help psychiatrists further understanding how this vagus nerve stimulation is effective. There are twenty-two centers across the United Stated which will participate in this very...

But doctors specialized in treating malignant Mesothelioma at leading cancer centers expect better survival rates. Though Mesothelioma causes immense pain and suffering to the victim along with short life...

Creating My First MRI
An MRI (or magnetic resonance imaging) scan is a radiology technique which uses magnetism, radio waves, and a computer to produce images of body structures. The MRI scanner is a tube surrounded by a giant circular magnet. The patient is placed on a moveable bed which is inserted into the magnet. The magnet creates a strong magnetic field which aligns the protons of hydrogen atoms, which are then exposed to a beam of radio waves. This spins the various protons of the body, and they produce a faint signal which is detected by the receiver portion of the MRI scanner. The receiver information is processed by a computer, and an image is then produced. At the doctors on Friday afternoon I was told I might...

Ankle Sprains - A Physical Therapists Perspective
Introduction Sprained ankles are one of the leading causes of athletes to miss games during the season. Many times they are taped up & rushed back to the field without proper rehabilitation. More often than not, the ankle gets re-injured or worse, they end up with a knee, hip or low back injury. These injuries can be prevented by providing the proper healing time and rehabilitation. The same premise holds true for non-athletes. I have worked with a number of patients that have had multiple ankle sprains that were never given the opportunity to fully rehabilitate. The most common complaint is that their ankle turns over at any time without warning. All it takes is a slight bend in the pavement...
Pleural Mesothelioma -- Cancer of the Lung Lining
What is Pleural Mesothelioma?Pleural Mesothelioma or malignant pleural mesothelioma is cancer in the layer of the lungs that can spread to the lungs. The spread of the tumor over the pleura results in pleural thickening. This hinders the reflexivity of the pleura and encases the lungs in an increasing restrictive belt. With the lungs thus restricted, they get constricted in no time and a person is always out of breath.Pleural mesothelioma can be:- Diffuse and malignant (carcinogenic)- Localized and benign (non-cancerous)Benign pleural mesothelioma can be removed surgically, but the malignant tumors are the real terror heads. Most common among other mesothelioma cases, Pleural Mesothelioma is caused...

In fact, numerous studies demonstrate that countries with the highest intake of dairy, such as the U.S. and Holland, have the highest incidence of osteoporosis and fractures, while countries with very low calcium intake have the lowest rates of osteoporosis and fracture. Instead of focusing simply on calcium, begin to think about strong bones as needing a strong and balanced diet to stay healthy. Eating more greens is a great way to start.Green vegetables are the...

Graphology- an Introduction
Graphology became a common term. Many people have started to use it, but only few know what Graphology really means and what graphologist do when they analyze text samples. In a nut shell, Graphology is the study and analysis of handwriting. The literal meaning of this term is "the science of handwriting" but the assertions that this science are based upon claim that handwriting is more than just a collection of lines, circles, semicircles, commas and spaces, but a reflection of the inner mind, therefore a better way to explain what graphology or handwriting analysis is, is to describe it as the psychology of handwriting. Handwriting can tell many things about a person. Examining one's slant and...
American Hospitals Kill 100,000 A Year
If you've ever had the sneaking suspicion hospitals aren't doing all they can to prevent infections, you may be right. According to three studies published in the American Journal of Medical Quality, most hospital-acquired, or nosocomial infections, arise as a result of hospital procedures, not from the level of patients' illness. Inadequate hand-washing and insufficient donning of sterile clothing by busy healthcare workers are believed to be major contributing factors. The Veterans Affairs hospital in Pittsburgh, PA thought more could be done and began an experimental program six years ago, utilizing simple sanitation and isolation techniques to cut the infection rate by 78% in their surgical care...
With any treatment in a hospital that requires concentrated doses of radiation, it is important that both the patient and the workers are protected from extra doses, and from radiation spilling to an area it was not intended to reach. The most familiar example of a common treatment using radiation is the use of the x-ray machine. Many of the pioneers of x-ray technology eventually succumbed to cancers which were created through exposure to radiation; this in itself is indicative of the potential dangers of long term, repeated exposure to this type of technology. Eventually, it was discovered that high density lead proved an effective barrier against both x-rays and gamma rays, and this element now...

Laser X-Rays- It is Possible
X-Rays have been in use as a medical imaging technique since 1895 when Wilhelm Roentgen found that he was able to make photos of body structures like tissues and bones by putting electromagnetic waves through the body. He named the project ?X? because he did not initially know the composition of the ?rays?. X-Rays have been the building block upon which medical imaging technology and medical imaging equipment have been made. Although the X-Ray (or radiograph) has been a fundamental tool for medical imaging, this approach has always had the down side that the photos created are not exact, which makes it so it requires very careful examination and interpretation. Scientists have long searched for a...

CT and MRI Scans in Neurological Practice: A Quick Overview
Have you ever wondered how computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are made? Admittedly, some of it occurs by magic, but the truth can be told about the rest of the process. Before computed tomographic (CT) scans became available in the 1970s, there was no good method for imaging the brain. The available methods and technologies struck around the target without quite hitting the bull's-eye. We had skull x-rays which imaged the bony brain-case, but not the brain itself. We had arteriograms which imaged the insides of blood-vessels supplying the brain. We had nuclear brain scans which imaged chunks of brain that were recently damaged. We had a particularly nasty test...
How to Stop Deforestation?
Deforestation has rapidly destroyed much of the planet's forests for years. One major challenge for governments and environmentalists alike would be how to stop deforestation so current environmental conditions would not come to worse. Early Breast Cancer Detection
Most women are familiar with mammography as our "gold standard" for breast cancer screening. However, there are additional tools available that women can add to their arsenal. One of the most effective tools in breast cancer screening is breast self-exam (BSE). However, BSE works best when women are appropriately trained in the procedure, and then followed-up with annual clinical breast exams (CBE) from their physicians. In a 2000 University of Toronto study, approximately 20,000 women were screened for breast cancer with BSE and annual CBE, and 20,000 were screened with BSE and mammograms. After more than 10 years, the BSE and annual CBE reported 610 cases of invasive breast cancer, and 105...
